In the past, breast cancer screening recommendations have advised women to complete monthly self-breast exams. Recent changes now recommend developing breast self-awareness instead of performing detailed exams every month.
Breast self-awareness is a great step to becoming more familiar with your breasts in order to better recognize any changes, lumps, or bumps. But how does one become truly self-aware of their breasts if they don’t know what to look for, where to start or what the best method is?
We know that early detection helps saves lives, so we continue to recommend regular self-breast exams. Perhaps quarterly instead of monthly. The task of performing a proper self-breast exam can seem daunting, so first begin by developing breast self-awareness and just focus on how your breasts feel, then build upon that.
